Build a useful Home page

1. Start with the existing Pages

Open Pages, then All Pages. Find the About page from wp-04 and check that Privacy Policy still says Draft. We are adding one Home page. Keep About and the advice post. Do not use the policy draft as your Home page.

2. Create a page called Home

Choose Add Page. If Choose a pattern opens, close it. Type Home in Add title. Home is this page’s title. Creating a page with this name does not make it the site’s front page; we choose that in wp-08.

3. Explain the example in one short paragraph

Click the body below Home. Type the paragraph shown here. The first words should explain what the site is and what the reader can do next. These are example services for our fictional course business.

4. Give the services a heading

At the end of the paragraph, press Enter for a new block. Type /heading and choose Heading. Type How we can help. Keep this as Heading 2 (H2). Home is the page’s main heading; H2 marks a section below it. Choose a heading for its job, not just to make text larger.

5. Put the example services in a list

At the end of How we can help, press Enter. Type /list and choose List. Add each service below as its own list item, pressing Enter between them. After the last item, press Enter twice to leave the list. These are services for our fictional example, not verified offers from a real business.

6. Add a clear next step

In the empty block below the list, type /heading and choose Heading. Keep H2 and type Learn about this example. Press Enter, then type About our approach. Select only those words and press Ctrl+K (Command+K on Mac). Enter the normal About address you checked in wp-04, then press Enter to apply it. On our course copy the address is /about/, as the screenshot shows. Use your own verified address if your site uses a different path; do not copy the course host address. Keep the link in the same tab.

7. Save the same Home draft

Choose Save draft and wait for Saved. Reload the editor. Check Home, the introduction, both H2 headings, all three list items and the linked sentence. Keep this page as a draft. Do not choose Publish or change Settings → Reading for this lesson.

8. Read the preview and follow its link

Open View, then Preview in new tab. Read from the title to the introduction, services and next step. The two section headings should help you find your way. Click About our approach. Check that it opens the About page with the truthful course paragraph. Return to the editor when done. A draft preview needs your signed-in session; it is not a public Home page.

Practise

In the same Home draft, find the introduction, two H2 headings, three list items and About link. Preview the page and follow the link once. Explain why saving this draft has not changed the site’s front page.

Check your result

There is one saved Home draft with the intended introduction, service list and a link that opens About. The page uses one main title and two H2 section headings. About and the advice post remain published, Privacy Policy stays a draft, and the site’s front page setting is unchanged.
